GREEN Arches?
The word "obesity" appeared in 56 bills before congress this year, and the food industry is desperately trying to avoid the kind of scrutiny, control, and fallout suffered by the tobacco industry. The answer: the food industry has to pro-actively take steps to make its products more healthy - that way the government doesn't have to step in and tell them how to. McDonalds, proud inspiration of Supersize Me, has recently "improved" its menu somewhat, started test marketing some vegetarian options in a few California locations, and for two days offered special vegan options at some locations in India.

McDonalds? Vegan? Before you condone this as a sign of the apocolypse consider how wonderful it is to see that McDonalds is willing to 1) listen to people who are quite openly not their customers, and 2) experiment with their menu to measure public reaction. McDonalds is about the last place that anyone concerned with health (their own, that of others, that of animals, or that of the environment) would ever eat, but it is a relief to see the world's largest restaurant chain taking baby steps in the right direction. It will be a long time before we can eat there - even their fries aren't vegan (at least they're vegetarian now) - but the company is at least slowly moving towards the goals we would set were we Head Clown and CEO.
We Know They're Out There...
There are other restaurants around the state that are vegan-friendly or that have some great vegan options and we would love to hear about your favorites - or your horror stories! Use this "submit a review" link.

Would You Like More Vegan Dining Options In Your Area?

As simple as it sounds, the answer is to eat out more often and to ask the restaurant managers about their vegan options. Could that be made with tofu instead of meat? Could this be made with olive oil instead of butter? Please don't lecture them about animal rights, just let them know that there are restaurant customers out here who would eat in their establishment if there were more vegan options on their menus. The more we all speak up, the sooner we will begin to see positive change. Stop accepting a chef salad or basket of french fries in silence. You're helping save the world - you deserve more than that!  .
