Wal-Mart Supercenter, Multiple Locations
Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, Multiple Locations
As one of the world's largest retailers we would fully expect Walmart to carry a selection of vegan convenience foods, and they do. For example, we've seen "deli slices" by both Tofurkey and Melissa's, and a selection of items by Veggie Patch, Amy's Kitchen, and Morningstar Farms. Surprisingly though Wal-mart tends to be more expensive than both Krogers or Wild Oats, and carries no vegan cleaning supplies or dairy substitutes other than a single brand of soy milk. If you live near a Kroger or Wild Oats you have a choice; otherwise what you pay for at Wal-Mart is the convenience of not having to drive to another town to buy those items. In that regard we should be thankful to Walmart for making some cruelty-free vegan products available in some of the more remote parts of the state. Their web site does not appear to have an online product request form like Kroger's; if anyone has had success special ordering a vegan product from Wal-Mart please let us know so we can share how it is done.
Kroger, Multiple Locations
Surprised? Why? A huge number of items for sale in almost any grocery store are vegan, they're just not labeled that way. Kroger is actually doing a very good job about slowly introducing specialty vegan, vegetarian, and organic options in many stores, and most of their stores will order your favorite vegan foods for you - they have a request form in the store or you can make your request online here. We've found that the newer the location, the greater the selection.

. Wyatt in Hot Springs says "But honestly I go to Kroger.  Kroger is usually cheaper and has a pretty decent selection of canned goods, frozen vege-meat, and lots of organic foods plus now they carry rice, almond, soy-nog, and lots of other non-dairy beverages."

The Fresh Market, Coming Soon to Pleasant Ridge Town Center, Little Rock, AR 72212
The Fresh market is an upscale food market being built in the same center as our up-and-coming Saks / Parisian store, all due to open this October in the Pleasant Ridge Town Center at Cantrell & Pleasant Ridge. Their corporate office tells us that they will be carrying many vegan items, including fresh bakery items such as Rosemary Pane Rustico, Neo-Tuscan Boule, Pan Bianco, Simple Focaccia, Sesame Semolina Loaf, and Sunflower Bread. We can smell it baking already... (Note: They have a store in Memphis if you want a pre-view!)
The Old Country Store, 455 Broadway St., Hot Springs, AR 71901, (501) 624-1172
Wyatt reports that "I have been a vegetarian my entire life and vegan for about six months, and I have been going to The Old Country Store for over twenty years.  This store is decent especially for Hot Springs.  They carry a lot of
Worthington
sliced sandwich vege-meat, but it all has eggs in it.  However they do have a nice selection of Worthington canned goods, which most are vegan."

Fayetteville Farmers Market, Fayetteville Square, Fayetteville, AR 72701, (479) 575-1875
Their web site says they have two locations: "the downtown market... is open in 2005 from April 2nd until Thanksgiving. The times are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 7am - 1pm. It is open only on Saturday in November. Although it is an open-air market, rain or shine, the vendors will be there with fresh picked fruits vegetables, herbs and plenty of flowers. The Mill District Market is open every Thursday from May through September from 4 pm - 7 pm. [It] is located on the corner of 6th Street and S. School (Bus. Hwy. 71) in Fayetteville."
Ozark Natural Foods, 1554 N College Ave., Fayetteville, AR 72703,  (479) 521-7558
Their web site says they are "a cooperatively owned business that offers the freshest and finest quality foods available. We believe that the purity, wholeness, nutrition and flavor of food contribute to the quality of life. Whenever possible, we offer food produced by the organic method (without synthetic chemicals)."
Wild Oats Market, 10700 N Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, AR 72227.  (501) 312-2326
New location being built in Midtowne Little Rock Center (Markham & University) will replace Rodney Parham store!
Wild Oats is currently settiing the gold standard in Arkansas for its wide selection of vegan foods, supplements, cleaning products, and more. We've noticed the store hasn't been kept as nice as usual recently, and now we know why: Wild Oats corporate office confirmed for us that they are building a new store in the Midtowne Little Rock retail center. You may have seen all the construction at the corner of Markham and University; an urban planning discussion forum we frequent describes it as being upscale and notes several other confirmed tenants such as Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, and White House/Black Market. Though Wild Oats did not confirm this, speculation is that they will be opening there in early 2007. We have seen Wild Oats locations in other parts of the country and they can have an upscale feel similar to Whole Foods Markets. We are really excited about this, because it will create a new buzz about the vegan products available there. More good news: also slated to open in MLR is Pei Wei, a "fast food" version of PF Chang's. Wyatt from Hot Springs says "for vegetarians, the Old Country Store is excellent, but for vegans ... I would head up to Wild Oats in Little Rock, and go to your local Kroger as a fall back plan."
Eating right sure is easier if you know where to start, so here are a few places we've tried or been told about.
If you would like to recommend another great grocer please let us know!

Granary St, 3425 New Boston Rd., Texarkana, TX 75501, (903) 831-5940
This location is so new they're not even in the online phone books yet - thanks to alert Arkansas vegan Sandy for sharing this with everyone! She says "I didn't know how to submit this, but there is a great new Health Food Store (with food, not just supplements!!) called "Granary St." down on New Boston Rd. They have alot of vegan stuff including hard-to-get soy "margarine", non-dairy products such as Tofutti ice cream and sandwich slices, and organic produce. It is at 3425 New Boston Rd. That's on the Texas side of Texarkana, but even so, I hope you post this review." Done!
